THE ALABAMA ROOM OFFERS ASSISTANCE TO INDIVIDUALS INTERESTED IN ANNISTON, CALHOUN COUNTY, AND ALABAMA HISTORY AND PERSONAL GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH.

Effective January 1, 2008 prints ordered through the library will incur a handling fee of $5.00.  The fee will be payable prior to placing the print order.

The members of the AlaBenton Genealogical Society who attended the 2009 Christmas party included, first row, Carolyn Hoots, Becky Carden, Lou Walker and Dee Bass; second row, Sallie Johnston, Lauren Ward and Robert Prince; third row, Deanna Slappey, Sonny Matthews, Kitty Bussey, Diann Hale, Louise Matthews, Peggy Smith, Randy Bussey, Shirley Wilson, Tom Mullins, Ann Norton, Carrie Stubbs, Judith Reaves, Dot Bishop and Mary Francis McGhee.

At its annual meeting in the Ayers Room of the Public Library of Anniston-Calhoun County, the AlaBenton Genealogical Society presented gifts to librarian Tom Mullins for the Alabama Room.

The gifts were from AlaBenton, the Patrick Cleburne Chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Chinnabee-Ft. Strother Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Cheaha Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, the AlaBenton Genealogical Society and individual members of the groups.

Ten new books and $3,335 were donated primarily for acquisitions for the Alabama Room.

 

Tee Morgan's books Annie's Town and Annie's Town Revisited are available for purchase in the Alabama Room.

  • BESSIE COLEMAN COLLECTION - Bessie Coleman Robinson was a local historian who also wrote articles for the Anniston Star. Her collection is catalogued by subject name. ONLINE
  • LENORA MARTIN COLLECTION - Lenora Martin was a local genealogist. She wrote articles for the Jacksonville News in the mid-1970's. Her collection is catalogued by subject name. ONLINE
  • RUSSELL BROTHER'S PHOTOGRAPHY - Photographs of Anniston and many of Annistonians taken in the late 1800's and early 1900's. These photographs are of the local business community and studio portraits. These may be accessed through the library's catalog.  Type in the name, business, or event you are interested in with the word "graphic" (not in quotation marks) after your search term, and hit enter.  Link directly to the picture by clicking on the small link icon at the bottom right of the returned record.
